Global backlash over alleged desecration of Jesus Christ statue in southern Lebanon

Southern Lebanon (Monitoring Desk): A viral image showing an Israeli soldier allegedly striking a crucifix statue of Jesus Christ with a hammer in southern Lebanon has sparked widespread anger and condemnation around the world.

According to Qatar’s broadcasting network Al Jazeera, the Israeli army confirmed the authenticity of the image on Monday, stating that initial investigations suggest it was taken during a military operation in southern Lebanon.

The statement added that a full investigation has been launched, and disciplinary action will be taken against those found responsible based on the findings.

Reacting to the incident, Palestinian Knesset member Ayman Odeh strongly criticized the act, sarcastically suggesting that the next justification might be that the soldier “felt threatened by the statue.”

Another Palestinian lawmaker, Ahmad Tibi, said that those who target mosques, churches, and religious sites while escaping accountability are making such actions increasingly routine.

The incident has triggered renewed global debate over religious sensitivities and ongoing regional tensions, with various quarters condemning the act and calling for transparent investigations.
