Baku (Turkiye Khabar): The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is being observed worldwide every year on June 17.
According to reports, this day was established in 1994 through a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, with the aim of raising awareness about the worsening condition of land degradation and the impacts of drought across the world. The date was also chosen to mark the historic occasion when the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was adopted.
The United Nations has instructed member states to focus on public awareness activities and the promotion of international cooperation on this day, in order to make land protection and restoration efforts more effective.
The UN also observed the period from 2010 to 2020 as a decade against desertification and drought, with the aim of maintaining soil fertility and promoting environmental protection measures.
According to environmental experts, desertification is a serious global issue in today’s era, affecting large areas of agricultural land worldwide and posing threats to the livelihoods and lives of millions of people.
